Day 44

Tigre's puppies are growing, a little cottage cheese mixed in her kibble or knuckles bones or hard biscuits seem to help.  Momma got a bath and a tummy shave this past weekend, sleeping in her whelping box close to my bed every night.  It's getting puppy-ish around here!

Day 42 to 49 Puppy and Momma's Development for Week 7

Developed puppies continue to grow. Dams will start shedding her tummy hair. If you haven't shaved your dam you may start finding lots of hair on the carpets.

Suggestions:

Increase food... avoid home cooked unbalance foods. Try to make them eat a balanced diet, not just meat. But if your Dam starts getting fussy, doctor up her meals with cooked chopped beef heart, liver, chicken hearts etc... some extra meat is good... too much can cause problems.

Stop all rough play and jumping

At the end of this week, day 48 to 50, take the dam off of the puppy food and put her back on regular kibble. You can change gradually over a couple days, but you have to limit the calcium intake you are feeding, so the dam's body goes into store calcium mode.

Shall we start with measuring the girth?
Tigre' started at 24" at one week pregnant, today she is 28"


It's a rule of thumb for full term canines, measuring the last rib around the belly will help determine how many puppies there are.  Well, yes, we had an ultrasound so we do know she has ten puppies, but for fun, and isn't that what partis are for, I like to measure the girth up to whelping,


With Tigre' starting at 24" and having ten puppies, before going into labor her girth should be about 34", wow huh?

This Stage Development of Puppies

Tigre' is 6 1/2 weeks along, see below for puppy development stages through week seven
Today she is 39 days pregnant


WEEK SIX (Days 36-42)

DEVELOPMENT OF THE PUPPIES
*  Development of skin pigment  (please note, pigment as the nose color, not the actual coat color)
* Fetuses should weigh around 6 grams and be 45 mm long
* Fetal heartbeats can be heard with a stethoscope (wish I had a stethoscope!)

CHANGES IN THE BITCH
* Nipples darken and enlarge
* Abdomen continues to enlarge

CARE OF BITH
(my stuff to care for her)
* Add cottage cheese or hard boiled egg to food daily  (note, I feed her a special meal twice a day, soon to be three times a day, OC Raw Dog food and for variety "All Natural, My Perfect Pet" it's cooked instead of raw kept in the freezer, I actually really like this food.  The OC Raw gives her kinda loose stools, however, I mix it with her kibble (Orijin) and she has access to kibble throughout the day coming in and out of the house, whenever she wants to nibble)
* Increase the amount of food in the extra meal
* Bitch should start sleeping in whelping box  (she's just now ready to start doing this, starts tonight)

(I noticed last night she wanted to ball thrown once and was done and then took a nap until we went to bed, she ate once and pottied once, but slept the rest of the evening)
* Radiographs (X-rays) possible to determine number and size of puppies
(with breeding our females to smaller males we aren't so concerned about too large of puppies for the dam, we also do an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy about 28-35 days along, sometimes we do an additional X-ray the week she's due, I am considering do this with Tigre')


week's 8 and 9 are when the bitch is on whelping alert, this blog will be updated in about 1.5 weeks for the next stage

They say to guess the size of a puppy is to look at the size of the parents, 
the puppy should be in between the size of the parents (of course some smaller, 
some larger) ... hence, with Everad's previous litter and the size between 
Everad and Tigre', I believe we will have four moyen puppies to be 17-20" 
full grown,and six puppies that will be 21-24", I'm guessing the largest male 
will be a black & white parti

Pictures of Tigre' now 6 wks pregnant

she's now 6 wks, her tummy is like a drum but lumpy, pregnant or not you can see she's running around this morning to keep up with the animal feeding next door, it's the poodle's morning ritual, they love to watch and communicate with the horses, goats, sheep, chickens, roosters and their little terriers, they have one small herding dog, he's quite beautiful (he better be neutered! no mixing around here!)

Good Morning, we slept in until 7:15 today

Ultrasound Results

Took her to the Cryobank in Escondido today, the ultrasound lady's comment was "it's tough to count these puppies, they are packed in there like little sardines"

10 puppies are on their way

"little" ...  ?  sounds like more kleins in there after all

Could it be five kleins out of ten like Grace and Everad's litter.  This is Everad's second litter of ten puppies ... could be lots to pick from for a klein puppy, also could have color options too

Blog your favorite "E" nickname

Tigre' is feeling more pregnant than she looks.  Her nipples are starting to turn from pink to darker with rounding out where the milk is coming in.  She seems to have tummy upset this morning, she burps and drinks water and is asleep besides me as I type.  And there's Grace next to her, Hilde is on the fluffy pillow, tough to get comfortable these days.


Wow, thinking of a "THEME" for this "E" litter has been tough
only thing I've come up with is "elite" or "exotic"
I am looking for nicknames that are uncommon as elite or exotic names

Keep in mind we do not use names that have a "ssss" sound  or a "ch" sound.  It's well known that reputable breeders do not use the "sss" sound or "ch" sound due to the dog's natural instinct

In the wild kingdom of instinct, animals, including these canines, your dog will instinctfully stay away from sounds of danger hence the "ssss" like a snake and ch sound like shushing the dog away from you.  If you are around dogs of any kind, especially in a dog training setting, someone will say, "my dog is so stubborn, I tell him/her to do something and they pause or go the other way!  How do I get them to come to me, I'm so frustrated 

what are the dogs thinking?  HERE CHARLIE ... CH?  why would I go towards a danger sound?!  SASHA COME HERE!  SaSS WHAT?!  the animal is saying.  You could be saying, COME PRECIOUS, and they are saying, DANGER RUN THE OTHER WAY!

Name your puppy wisely, listen to what the innate insticts of a puppy/dog is saying to you.  When training a puppy what you are thinking is not always what they are thinking...

ending Week 4 going into Week 5

geez, how does this go so fast, today Tigre' is 28 days

Ultrasound is schedule for Saturday

************she's ending her 4th week and going into her 5th week**************

Days 21 to 28  (Week 4) 

Vet can Palpate (feel) and possibly detect pregnancy between days 27 and 31 
(after day 32, fluids increase to protect pups and making palpating not possible)

--Fetus's grow from 5-10mm to 14-16mm, faces take shape, eyes and spinal cords developed.

Suggestions:

-- Limit working dogs and refrain from Strenuous activity like jumping and long runs. For small Companion Dogs, slightly reduce activity, especially in agility

-- Some like to add 1/4 cup of cottage cheese + 1 scrambled egg every other day. Or mix (refrigerate) + add a tbsp to daily food (yes we have been)  


This week we are taste testing OC RAW DOG FOOD, it's all natural, with AAFCO guidelines and human grade fresh meat & produce, wheat free, grain free, all natural.  


We feed all of our poodles NuVet vitamins and wean the puppies on NuVet daily.  Our puppies are especially healthy from the womb

Day 28 to 35

At this time the fetuses begin to look like dogs; their toes, whiskers, claws all are developing. They have become boy and girl puppies, eyes that were open-now close. (When eyes are developing in the uterus, the eyes are developed in an open position and then they close and remain closed until about 10 days old or so.)

Embryos are MUCH more resistant to development problems now

The Dam's weight will begin to increase, and swelling will begin to be noticeable. 

If you have given a maternity haircut swelling will be easier to see.

this is the week she starts to gain weight quickly

Suggestions
--Increase food slightly (she's getting hungry, we've had her on puppy Orijin since we bred her, now that we just moved to California we are looking into other holistic/natural dog foods, we are not able to get Orijin locally. 

You can do an ultrasound at this time, if you wish (ultrasound is scheduled for saturday)

Getting warm weather already and not yet spring, gave Tigre' a very short summer do to keep her cool

Grace behind her (silver/blue), Everad in the blue collar and Hilde trying to get comfortable also pregnant.  These are in the house kind of poodles, no kennel dogs here!

the hair do is very short, no leggings or ear hair, will grow back evenly and will look very pretty later, meanwhile, she will be neat and cool for warm weather puppies.  Tigre' is 24" about 50#

Our Caniche Moyen/kleinpudel male is the sire of this litter, he's an intelligent, affectionate, pointed in UKC and training in agility great guy.  Full of love and energy at 18" and 23#, black

Today Tigre' is going into her 3rd week

March 19th is Tigre's ultrasound, two weeks from yesterday, we check on her and the puppies, the fun stuff is count how many puppies she has.  Everad's last litter with Grace had ten puppies, half kleins and half small standard poodles, seven girls and three boys.  Their new families keep in touch with us which helps a lot to estimate for this and other litters and we love to know how they are doing,

Tigre' can go into the 10th week fully before she whelps (4/24th), we start the puppy watch on Day 56 (4/10th), we estimate her due date as April 17th but in reality can be any time from April 10th (most undesireable) to April 24th.

here's Tigre's progress so far...

Days 14 to 21  

Tigre's nipples are pink and have been for a week, she's getting a fuller look to her abdomen, she's running and playing as always, however, starting to slow down and rest more, when she sleeps she sleeps soundly

eating well, today's lunch will consist of raw or cooked chicken, maybe a little elbow macaroni for good measure.  Generally she is playing, sleeping and getting lots of hugs.  We now have an acre that she's enjoying immensely.

Between days 7 and 14 days, the cell will start being a 4 cell, and will separate into 64 cells. At this time the Embryo's enter the uterus.
